keen i photo :: who am i?

Erik J. Russell

My father was a photographer. Not a professional. No training (that I know of). And he probably never made money at it. But he loved to do it and he loved to share it.

Despite the hours and hours and hours of slideshows my siblings and I had to endure, I developed a real love for the art. He had images of Norwegian fjords and reindeer...Jerusalem sunrises and Bethlehem sheep...Canadian summer picnics and winter landscapes...Scottish castles and cathedrals...Haitian slums and Bahamian flowers. Some of those images have been in my brain for almost my entire life.

My father was a photographer because he loved the process of discovering an image, capturing it, and sharing it. As he developed his skill, he rarely developed prints...the majority of his images were slides. I realise now that that was because he always thought photos were supposed to be shared (who looks at slides by themselves?).

I know now that my love for the image came from my father. My slide projector is the Internet. I shoot exclusively on digital cameras because I love the freedom, choice, quality and immediacy of that medium.

Many of my friends think I'm a bit nuts because I carry my camera with me almost everywhere. In the car, to my seat on every plane ride, to soccer games, to work ... everywhere! I never know when that moment will be before me just begging to be captured. I believe that good photography is 90% being at the right place at the right time and 10% knowing when to click the shutter.

My wife used to tease me about my photos from years ago when I traveled in Israel, Greece and Egypt. "Where are the people?" she would ask. I would tell myself that the Great Pyramid of Giza doesn't need people! I was so caught up with the experience of the place or the thing that was standing in front of me that I didn't want people to ruin it!

Today, I would rather photograph people than anything else. I love the experience of creating a new image in unison and watching the development of a unique visual expression where the subject is fluid and thoughtful and speaks its own message beyond the one that I capture with my camera.

Does all of this qualify me to be a "photographer"? I'll leave that up to you.
